The Tools For Your Trade initiative helps to alleviate the financial burden on eligible Australian Apprentices, in the first year of their Australian Apprenticeship, by providing tool kits worth up to $800 including GST. The Tools For Your Trade Initiative is an additional incentive targeted to Australian Apprentices. Tools received under the Tools for Your Trade initiative are not to affect or displace any tool allowance received as part of an award, or any private arrangement between the employer and the Australian Apprentice for the provision of tools. How does the Initiative work? Australian Apprentices who start in an Australian Apprenticeship from 1 July 2005 in an eligible trade occupation experiencing skills needs will receive a tool kit voucher after completing the first three months of their Australian Apprenticeship. The tool kit will be provided to the Australian Apprentice’s employer. The employer will make the kit available to the Australian Apprentice to use and the Australian Apprentice will be entitled to keep the kit after they have completed a further six months. If the apprentice leaves before this time, the employer can keep the tools for the use of other apprentices or pre-vocational and work experience students. When does it start? The Tools For Your Trade Initiative started from 1 July 2005 for eligible Australian Apprentices. Apprentices who start their Australian Apprenticeship on 1 July will have their tool kits purchased from 1 October 2005 and will be entitled to keep them when they have completed nine months of their Australian Apprenticeship. What will the tool kit consist of? The employer and the Australian Apprentice will choose a tool kit which is most appropriate to the Australian Apprentice and the trade.
